Actriz estadounidense. Debutó como cantante de ópera en Boston a la edad de 19 años, pero al poco tiempo fue perdiendo su voz y entonces se dedicó a la actuación. En 1837 estrenó su trabajó más popular, el papel de Meg Merrilies en
Guy Mannering, convirtiéndose así en la primera estrella del teatro nacida en EE.UU. En 1842 comenzó a diridir un teatro en Filadelfia, donde protagonizó
Macbeth junto con William Macready. En 1854–55 realizó una gira por Inglaterra con gran éxito. Fue una actriz con un poderoso y amplio rango emocional. Interpretó a Lady Macbeth, además de papeles masculinos como Romeo y Hamlet.
